Camping and Essential Oils

Spending a lot of time outdoors, essential oils can really come in handy for first aid treatment.

This is a basic list of essential oils to keep on hand on a while I’m camping.   I also make sure to have my Natural by Kerri Bug spray, Sunscreen, Bug bite relief and Lavender freshner spray on hand while I’m camping too.  Lavender is to spray inside my tent before bed since I can’t bring my diffuser with me.  


Soothes bruises, burns, cuts, and scrapes; relieves itchiness from bee stings; treats allergies and asthma; eases headaches; combats mild bacterial and fungal infections; repels insects; soothes insomnia.

Tea Tree
Relieves colds and sinusitis; alleviates and disinfects skin irritations like cuts, scrapes, and bug bites.
Soothes aches, pains, and itchy skin; eases headaches; relieves nausea and upset stomach; combats viral and fungal infections; provides cooling sensation.
Repels insects; relieves muscle pain, fatigue, headaches, and migraines; alleviates cold and flu symptoms.

Helpful Hints!!


Nausea and Indigestion:   Drip 3 drops peppermint oil onto a wash cloth. Hold it under your nose, and breathe slowly and deeply for 1-3 minutes. The menthol in peppermint oil improves circulation and stops nausea quickly.

Overheating:  Apply diluted peppermint oil to the back of neck or soles of feet for fast, cooling relief. This is also great to do before hiking or long treks to keep the feet cool and comfortable.

Minor Burns:   Apply 2-3 drops lavender oil directly on the site and gently spread over the affected area. This also works great for bee stings.

Headache:   Apply diluted peppermint oil to the temples, brow line, and back of neck for quick relief.



How to Clean a Bee Sting

Before using one of the oils below, make sure to thoroughly clean the sting site. If the stinger is still inside your skin, you have to remove it first. Don’t try to pull or pluck it out, as you may rupture the sac which will release more venom. Simply scrape across the skin with a card or your finger nail to swipe the stinger away. Once you’re sure it’s gone, gently clean the area with water and soap then go on to use one of the oils for assistance with the stinging.


Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender should assist in stopping the venom almost instantly. Just put a drop of lavender oil on the sting site.

Baking Soda

Since bee stings contain formic acid, using something with an alkalinizing effect like baking soda can help neutralize the sting. Just add enough water to some baking soda to form a paste, then apply it to the sting site and don’t wash off.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Just a drop or two of ACV on the site will help relieve pain. This is especially good wasp stings since they’re more alkaline. Make sure it’s raw Apple Cider Vinegar for the best benefit.


Surprisingly, adding honey to the sting site will reduce pain and swelling. Honey is also anti-bacterial and will help prevent infection. Local, raw honey is always best.

Garlic Cloves

This is an old folk remedy that apparently works very well. Just crush a garlic clove to release it’s juices, then press it against the sting site to relieve the pain.
****  These natural bee sting remedies should only be used by those who are not allergic to bee stings. A normal reaction includes pain, itchiness, swelling, and redness. ****

If you experience an allergic reaction, or the following symptoms, get  medical help immediately:

  • dizziness
  • difficulty breathing
  • nausea
  • multiple bee stings
  • swollen tongue
  • slurred speech
  • blurry vision
  • abnormal swelling
  • rash or hives
